Edge Extension (Selected Edges): Extend Only the Areas You Choose

Extend or shrink specific edges of a pattern so the shape matches your installation style—without changing every edge.

Purpose: Extend or shrink specific edge sections using a precise inward/outward value.

Tool: Canvas → Edge Extension → Selected Edges

Edge Extension changes the pattern shape. Use small values first and confirm the dotted-line preview before applying.

Why this matters

  • Problem: Installers often need extra film only on specific edges for wrapping/tucking, while keeping other edges unchanged.
  • What EDGE improves: Selected Edges lets you extend or shrink only the boundary sections you choose (Point A to Point B).
  • Result: Targeted control with fewer unnecessary changes and less waste.

What this feature does

  • What it is: Extends/shrinks only the edge segments you define by selecting boundary points.
  • What it helps you do: Add coverage where needed and preserve other edges.
  • What it does not do (optional): It does not automatically decide where to add film—you choose the segments.

Video — Edge Extension: Selected Edges

Covers: Selecting edge points, previewing inward/outward extensions, and applying Extend.

When to use: When only certain areas need extra coverage.

Before you start

  • You need: A pattern opened in the canvas.
  • Recommended: Zoom in before selecting points so you choose the correct segment.
  • Terms used (optional): Outward = increase area, Inward = decrease area, Dotted line = preview.

How to use it

Workflow

Workflow A — Extend a specific section

  1. Open Selected Edges mode
Where: Canvas tools → Edge Extension
    Do: Select Selected Edges.
Expected result: Edge selection mode is active.
  2. Set extension amount
    Where: Tool settings panel
Do: Enter a value in mm or inches.
Expected result: Amount is ready to apply.
  3. Choose direction
    Where: Tool settings panel
    Do: Select Outward or Inward.
Expected result: Preview direction is set.
  4. Select the segment (Point A → Point B)
    Where: Pattern boundary
Do: Click two points on the edge.
Expected result: Segment between points is identified and previewed with a dotted line.
  5. Add more segments (optional)
    Where: Pattern boundary
Do: Select additional point pairs using the same settings.
Expected result: Multiple segments are queued.
  6. Apply
    Where: Tool action button
    Do: Click Extend.
Expected result: Selected segments update on the pattern.

Note: Nothing changes until you click Extend.

Tips

  • Start small (1–3 mm) and increase only if needed.
  • Use Selected Edges for targeted wrap allowance; use All Edges for uniform changes.
  • Always verify the dotted preview before applying.

Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Selecting points while zoomed out → Fix: Zoom in before selecting Point A and Point B.
  • Mistake: Expecting changes immediately → Fix: Click Extend to apply.

Troubleshooting

Issue: Nothing changes after selecting points
Cause: Extend was not applied
Fix: Click Extend.

Wrap-up

You extended only the edge sections you selected (Point A to Point B) using a precise inward or outward value. This gives targeted control over coverage while keeping the rest of the outline unchanged.
